Increasing our Writing Productivity

30 Jul

003And a very Happy Tuesday to you all.  I hope you had a PRODUCTIVE Monday and you are ready to take on all challenges today.

And yes, today we are going to talk about productivity.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Productivity is never an accident. It is always the result of a commitment to excellence, intelligent planning, and focused effort.
Paul J. Meyer
Let me ask you this:  What if this were one of the old Communists countries, and there were only a limited number of writers allowed each year, and that those allowed to write were determined by their productivity…..would you increase your productivity in order to keep doing what you love?

Of course you would, and that is the point of this lesson.  You will never improve if you don’t keep writing…you will never achieve your writing goals if you don’t keep writing.  Writing is a craft and like all crafts it improves with effort and practice.

I don’t know how much time you spend writing each day. I know a lot of you have full time jobs and writing time is limited….and I understand….but….

Productivity does not happen by accident.  Read the quote again and then ask yourself if you are writing as much as you could be or should be.

TIP OF THE DAY

Set aside a specific amount of time each day to write.  Even if it is just fifteen minutes before bedtime, do it….or get up a half hour earlier in the morning…but do it!

CONTEST OF THE DAY

The Robert Watson Literary Prizes are now accepting submissions in fiction and poetry with a deadline of September 15th.  You can find the submission guidelines here.

FREE MONEY OF THE DAY

How about a weekend in Big Sur, California in October?  The Sun is offering two scholarships for room, board and tuition, and the applications can be found here.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

DSCN0747

Do you see anything worth getting excited about? I saw a sunset the other night that knocked my socks off and inspired a future article. I hope this picture does the same for you.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

We all have different goals, right? I don’t know what yours are….I want to inspire millions with my writing….pretty broad goal, and my challenge is always in how do I do it….how do I achieve that goal…what are the most productive avenues for me to take….

Universal questions for most writers I believe.

Best of luck to you all, and thank you for stopping by. I’ll be back on this blog Thursday, as tomorrow is my day for A Moment With Bill blog.

Writing Introductions and Conclusions

26 Jul

003And a Happy Friday to all of you.  Here we are, dragging our feet and trying to make it to the finish line so we can enjoy another beautiful summer weekend.  Do you have any plans? I hope you take a break from writing and replenish your inner engine.

Today let’s talk about……the relationship between introductions and conclusions.

But first a quote!

QUOTE OF THE DAY

If you think you’re too small to have an impact, try going to bed with a mosquito.
Anita Roddick

Come on, that’s funny!  And oh so true!  I know, I used too many exclamation points right then, but I can do that because this is my blog and the rules of good writing are suspended here. J

TIP OF THE DAY

Actually I have several tips regarding introduction and conclusion.

I have said this first statement until I am blue in the face…..the introduction needs to grab the reader and not let go.  It needs to be a slam dunk….and you have about ten seconds to accomplish that feat.

Why is this so hard to teach some writers? I don’t care if you are writing a recipe or the world’s next great novel, if you don’t take your readers prisoner in that first few paragraphs then you can forget about holding onto them.

When I am looking for a book to read at the library, I read the jacket synopsis and then I read the first paragraph of the book.  That’s all the time I have to waste on a decision of that importance, or lack of importance if you will.

And the conclusion….I have been teaching this for years….the conclusion must refer back to the introduction.  It must be the bow that you tie on to the complete package.  I am amazed by the number of writers who skip the conclusion all together, but then there are those who have a conclusion but it has nothing to do with the opening statements….and that is just sloppy writing.

SITE OF THE DAY

This is something I have not done on this site, but I’m going to refer you to one of my articles entitled “The Ten Second Rule of Writing.”  You can find it here and it should explain to you the importance of your introduction.

CONTEST OF THE DAY

This one is for Audrey who gets very excited when I post contests for poets….and well she should because she is sooooo good at poetry and has a very real chance to win one of these contests.  Anyway, this contest is called the Writer’s Digest Poetry Awards and the deadline is October 1st.  You can find all submission information here.

FOUNDATION SITE OF THE DAY

The Sustainable Arts Foundation has grants up to $6000 for writers who have families to raise…their way of helping to lessen the financial burden for those who have a ton of bills and need some assistance to continue writing.  Check them out here.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

006

Do you feel it? Well I do and it feels darn good. J

AND THAT’S IT FOR THIS WEEK

Have a great weekend and I’ll return with more writing thoughts on Tuesday next week. On Monday I’ll be popping up with A Moment With Bill, my other blog that features reflections about life.

Thank you for being here….you are all appreciated.

Bring the Creative Back Into Your Writing Creativity

24 Jul

003Welcome back!  You may have noticed that I am alternating my two blogs now.  I’m doing that to give my faithful followers a break quite frankly.  Asking you to read two blogs per day is a bit silly, don’t you think?  So one day it will be Artistry With Words and the next day we’ll do A Moment With Bill. Hopefully that way you won’t be disgusted when you see my blog pop up online. J

Topic of the day is creativity. Read the quote and then we’ll chat.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Creativity is just connecting things. When you ask creative people how they did something, they feel a little guilty because they didn’t really do it, they just saw something. It seemed obvious to them after a while. That’s because they were able to connect experiences they’ve had and synthesize new things.
Steve Jobs
Yep, you have to be creative in this business.  Everyone is doing the same old things in case you haven’t noticed.  Facebook is overflowing with promotions, as is Twitter.  How about coming up with new ways of promoting your writing?

What do you do that’s a bit different?  If you have any new suggestions feel free to mention them in your comment. I’d love to hear something new for a change.

TIP OF THE DAY

Schedule a reading at your local library.  Walk in, tell them that you are a writer, and see if they will let you read some of your works on a given day.  Who knows, right? What have you got to lose?  Sooner or later you are going to have to step out into the world and face the audience….why not today?

CONTEST OF THE DAY

For you poets there is the Button Poetry Contest….and you can check them out here.

WRITER OF THE DAY

Say hello to Marissa, a young lady with a passion for life and an infectious smile. You can find her brand new blog right here…it is called Tiny Pilgrim and I love the title. J

SITE OF THE DAY

Have you ever done a vlog to promote your latest work? Do you even know what a vlog is? Well you can find out by reading this helpful article.  Give it a try….vlogging is a nice way to attach your face to your writing and allow others to get to know you in a natural setting.  Remember, we are trying to find creative alternatives to promote your work, right?

PROMPT OF THE DAY

040

Look at the picture and then close your eyes and let your mind roam….and then write down a paragraph based on those thoughts….who knows…there might be a best-selling book in those thoughts.

WEIGHT LOSS TIP OF THE DAY

Huh?  Is Bill losing it? What’s with the weight loss nonsense?

Just my over-active mind at work.  I was thinking that if you edited all the fluff from your next piece you would have a slimmed down work of art.  Get it? Weight loss?

Seriously….something I remember a teacher of mine telling me a long time ago: if a section has no value to the story then erase it.  Good stories do not need distractions, so eliminate them and allow the writing to flow in the intended direction.

MORE ON FRIDAY

Every other day with this blog….so tomorrow I’ll be doing another Moment With Bill blog, and I’ll see you back here for more writing tips on Friday.  Have a great day writing.

Stagnation Kills A Writer

22 Jul

003Welcome back my friends and Happy Monday!  I know, Mondays are not our favorite days but hey, it beats pushing up daisies, so Happy Monday!

Today we talk about the growth of you as a writer.  Check out the quote and then we’ll chat a bit.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

The joy of life consists in the exercise of one’s energies, continual growth, constant change, the enjoyment of every new experience. To stop means simply to die. The eternal mistake of mankind is to set up an attainable ideal.
Aleister Crowley

“To stop means simply to die.”  Heavy words for sure, but how do they apply to your writing career?

I have harped and I have harped on expanding your writing abilities and continually building your writer’s platform.  I am about to harp some more.

We will begin with the assumption that you all have some game with regards to writing.  You all can write an intelligent sentence and you all have the ability to use grammar and construct a paragraph that would make Sister Mary Yardstick proud….but what’s next?  What is the next step you need to take?

This is a competitive business my friends, and if you ain’t growing you ain’t going anywhere.  Everyone wants instant success but few are willing to put in the time and effort to attain success.  Writers sign up for HubPages and then wonder why they aren’t earning passive income after three months.  Writers submit articles that they wrote ten years ago and wonder why magazine editors don’t get back to them singing their praises.  Writers churn out recipes or how-to articles in a matter of a couple hours and wonder why nobody is reading them.

There are no short cuts in the writing game.  You either improve and grow or you stagnate and slip into obscurity.  How’s that for blunt?

TIP OF THE DAY

Constantly look for ways to become a better writer.  Take a sentence at random and ask yourselves how you can re-write that sentence so it is better.  Go back and look at one of your old articles and ask yourselves how you can improve it.  Step out of your comfort zone and attempt a new genre of writing.  Do something each and every day to expand your abilities and give yourselves a better chance at success.

SITE OF THE DAY

I gave you this on Friday and I’m giving it to you again.  This is a great monthly competition that is free to enter, and if you win it will look great on your resume/platform.  Freestyle Writers.com is the site and you can find it here.  Do yourselves a favor and check it out.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

What would make you a better writer?  Serious question and one each of you should be asking yourselves.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

058

Let your imagination roam free…..what do you think of when you see this picture?

OFFER OF THE DAY

I keep making this offer and so far only one person has expressed an interest in it.  I am inviting you to guest blog for the day here or on my other blog, A Moment With Bill.  Just send me an email with your blog to holland1145@yahoo.com and I’ll give you a byline and a moment of cheap fame. J  The more you expand your audience the more your platform grows.

HAVE A GREAT DAY

You know me by now, so you know I’m serious when I say I want you all to succeed, but success comes with a price.  Pay the price of just be a diary writer the rest of your life.  I respect diary writers for they are writing for the pure joy of writing….but….if you actually want to find financial success in writing, then you have to step up to the plate and take your practice swings.

I’ll see you all tomorrow. Thanks, as always, for stopping by.

Writing Inspiration

19 Jul

003Happy Friday all my writing friends!

What shall we do today?

Someone asked me recently where I get my inspiration for articles.  Read the quote and then we’ll chat some more about inspiration.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.
John Quincy Adams

That’s two days in a row I’ve used a quote from a politician.  That concerns me on so many levels. LOL

Back to inspiration….where do I get the inspiration for articles?  I honestly don’t know how to answer that.  Inspiration is all around me.  I can be walking along and see a mother holding her little baby and an idea comes to me.  Yesterday I heard an old song I hadn’t heard for a long time and an article popped into my head.  It can be a sentence by someone or it can be a hawk flying overhead.

I think everyone has an unlimited number of articles inside of them, but so many times they are not receptive to the subconscious message being sent to the creative center of the brain.

Listen, if you are a writer then we know you have creativity….I think finding a way to become more receptive is the key.  The more I settle into my life as a writer, the more aware I am of things happening around me.  The colors are more vibrant, the emotions more raw and the imagination more in tune with my creative pursuits.

If I could give you a road map to the corner of “Creativity and Inspiration” I would, but I think the road map is already inside each and every one of you.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

Yellowstone 2009 019

Cool pic from Yellowstone.  Take a look…clear your mind…what does it remind you of? What events in your past relate to this picture? What memories does it unlock?

COOL PLACE OF THE DAY

I just found this site…they have a contest monthly for freestyle writers, no entry fee….you should probably check them out…Freestyle Writers.com

SITE OF THE DAY

The Writer Magazine is a helpful resource of ideas. I read it often and you might want to do the same. You can find it here.

TIP OF THE DAY

Spend fifteen minutes each day in inspiration mode.  Go off by yourself and listen to some music. Go for a walk in the woods.  Look at some art.  Read a book.  Sit in the park and listen to conversations. Observe passersby….all are excellent ways to unleash the ideas that are inside of you.

LET’S NOT OVERDO IT TODAY

It is, after all, Friday, so I’ll leave you for this week and catch up with you on Monday.  Also, on Monday I will be unleashing upon the unsuspecting my newest blog called “A Moment With Bill.”  It will be my creative blog where I can write in the style I love so much, and I hope you join me for some reflections about life.

Have a great weekend and remember to do something nice for yourself.  You have earned it.

Are You the Greatest Obstacle To Success?

18 Jul

003Good morning and welcome back on this Thursday.

Check out the quote below and then we’ll chat.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

There are no great limits to growth because there are no limits of human intelligence, imagination, and wonder.
Ronald Reagan
Hell must have just frozen over because I’m quoting Ronald Reagan. LOL

Now that I got my little snide remark out of the way, let’s get down to business, and today’s business is your writing career and writing platform.

Think of it as using building blocks to create a structure.  Each block, by itself, does not look like much, but when you get done stacking blocks you have the complete package.

Whatever your undertaking may be, from being a freelance writer to being an ebay businesswoman (Lizzy) you are building your platform for success, and the larger that platform the better your chances of success.

And there is nothing limiting your ability to build that platform.

I will unveil my new blog on Monday…it is called “A Moment With Bill” and for those of you who know me, you will recognize that title. It has been used on numerous articles that I have written as well as numerous videos I have made.  Soon I’m going to venture out in a new direction and try blogtalkradio and have my own live radio program once a week and yes, that program will be called “A Moment With Bill.”

It’s all part of the platform and grand plan.

What is your plan? Have you started building your platform?

SITE OF THE DAY

Here is a good article about developing your platform….from the Writer’s Digest….and you can of course find it here.

CONFERENCE OF THE DAY

The Writer’s Digest Conference is being held in Los Angeles the last weekend in September.  Read about it and find reservation information here.

BOOK OF THE DAY

Create Your Writer Platform is available through Amazon…find it here.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

DSCN0742

You know how this works….look at it and find inspiration.

QUESTION OF THE DAY

What is holding you back?  Take a few moments to silently reflect on that question….what single thing is most responsible for holding you back and strangling your potential?

TIP OF THE DAY

Brainstorm new ways to help build your platform.  Take five minutes to jot down some ideas and then pick the one that is most doable today….and then do it!

SEE YOU ON FRIDAY

I could give you another contest to enter and tell you about another workshop to attend, but I really want you to spend a little time thinking about how to advance your career as a writer.

I will leave you with that quest, and tell you all that I appreciate you taking the time to visit me once again.  Have a very productive day.

Teamwork in Writing

17 Jul

003Good morning my friends!  How are you today?

I’d like to spend a few minutes talking about collaboration, or in our case, working with other writers on a project.  First our quote of the day and then I will expand on this thought a bit.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Unity is strength… when there is teamwork and collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved.
Mattie Stepanek

I’ll just lay this idea out there and let you think about it for a moment or two….I would love to collaborate on a project with any of you.  It could be a co-written article, or a joint blog, or whatever else strikes your fancy.  I think it would be fun and I also think it would be beneficial to both of us.

Why?

Think of it as a way to expand your viewer base, or think of it as a way to learn from each other, or think of it as a way to become more creative….whatever the case, I’m all for sharing knowledge and talent.  If you think this is something you would be interested in then drop me an email at holland1145@yahoo.com and let’s discuss it.  Okay?  Fantastic!

IDEA OF THE DAY

Would you be interested in joining a writer’s forum if I started one?  It would be a place where we could meet on a regular basis, share ideas, answer questions, ask questions, brainstorm, whatever!  If that sounds like something you could dig then tell me in your comments.  I don’t want to go to the bother of setting one up if nobody is interested.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

What does it take to get accepted by an editor, publisher or agent?  Here are what I believe to be the top five necessities:

) good writing
2) good querying,
3) good timing,
4) good match of an agent’s knowledge to yours,
5) and luck.

Just sayin’

PROMPT OF THE DAY

teamwork

Get it? It has to do with teamwork.

MORE TOMORROW

I’m a little pressed for time today so you get off easy today.  Let me know what you think about the collaborative project and also about the writer’s forum.  As always, thanks for dropping by.  You are appreciated.

The Long Range Writing Plan and Accompanying Platform

16 Jul

003Good morning my friends!  I trust you are well-rested and ready to tackle your day and writing careers today.

Wednesday and Friday I will have articles coming out which talk about ways to boost your writing platform.  If you are interested I invite you to stop by HubPages and check those articles out.  You just might find something that can be of assistance since there are twenty tips total that are related to platform.

I’m also in the process of writing an article for the poets out there.  Whether you know it or not, I highly admire poets.  Being a poet and trying to make money as a poet are not easy tasks.  Unlike novelists, poets do not have a huge market to write to.  The demand is much smaller for poets and the opportunities are limited compared to other writers.  First and foremost, poets write for the sheer love of writing.  They provide works of art that entertain and make us think and reflect and remember, but they do it in a genre that is not mainstream.

Anyway, I have not forgotten you and I’ll have some suggestions for you by the middle of next week…maybe we can shake some trees and get some money to fall your way.

Now, a little more about platforms.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Being busy does not always mean real work. The object of all work is production or accomplishment and to either of these ends there must be forethought, system, planning, intelligence, and honest purpose, as well as perspiration. Seeming to do is not doing.
Thomas A. Edison

I guess Edison knew something about accomplishing things, didn’t he? J

Here’s the point I want to make today:  success in writing is a long-term undertaking.  There are so few overnight successes in writing as to be insignificant in this discussion.  For the most part, writers must have a long-range plan and then everything that they do must fit into that plan.

And it is the “everything that they do” portion that is your platform.  A writer’s platform is, for lack of a better description, their resume.  It is who and what they are as a writer, their credentials, their accomplishments, all rolled up in one.  The better your platform, the better your chance of success in this crazy writing world.

CONTEST OF THE DAY

If you want to boost your platform then enter and win a writing contest.  Here’s one to try….the Lee Smith Novel Prize is taking submissions of unpublished novels from now until October 15th. Entry fee of $20 and you can find all the details here.

WORKSHOP OF THE DAY

Once again, workshops are a great addition to your platform.  Here’s one you might consider…..Write On The Sound is held in October in beautiful Edmunds, Washington.  You not only will receive valuable information and instruction, but you will also be 50 miles from where I live and I’ll come visit you during your stay. How can you pass that up?  Check it out here.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

get it? platform? LOL

get it? platform? LOL

So?  Anything?  Are you feeling inspired?

MORE TOMORROW

What is tomorrow, Wednesday? Oh yes, there will definitely be more tomorrow.

Hey, I have a new blog in the works….it will be called A Moment With Bill….all part of the platform.

Is there anything I can do for you? I’m still waiting for some of you to do a guest blog on this site.  Anything having to do with writing is welcome….just let me know.

Have a great day unless you made other plans.

Finding Your Creative Genius In Writing

15 Jul

003QUOTE OF THE DAY

An essential aspect of creativity is not being afraid to fail.
Edwin Land
Obviously we now know what today’s blog post is about….creativity in freelance writing.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. (that was for Leslie)

How do you make money in freelancing if you do not write for content mills? That question was asked of me last Friday, and my article today tackled that question….and we are going to tackle it in this blog as well.

There are very few limits in freelance writing.  If you do not like what the content mills pay then don’t write for them.  Get out and find your own work and get paid what you are worth.

But how, Bill?  I can hear the whining from here.  How do we do it, Bill? Where do we start?

Just start!  Get business cards, set up a website and/or blog, go out and cold-call for jobs, apply for online jobs that actually pay what you are worth, network, set up contacts and above all, use your sense of creativity.

A friend of mine….Sydney….just created a website for tourism in Austin, Texas.  You can find it here.  She is going to sell advertising on it and build that writing gig from scratch.  She saw a need and now she is going to fill that need.  In other words, she used her imagination and her creativity and God bless her for having the courage to risk failure in order to possibly succeed.

Where is there a need in your community?  How can you fill that need?  What are the latest trends in society?  How can you use those trends to make money?

TIP OF THE DAY

I am going to pound this concept until the cows come home in hopes that someone starts listening…..FIND A NICHE AND DEVELOP IT, AND PRESENT YOURSELF AS AN EXPERT IN THAT NICHE!

I used capital letters to show you how serious I am with this point.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

Content mills would not be able to hire you for $5 for a 500 word article if there was nobody willing to do it for that pay.  This is simple Supply and Demand.  There is a huge demand for online writing, but unfortunately there is a glut of writers willing to do that online writing for practically nothing.

There once was a day when writing was considered a craft, and people had to pay craftsman wages for that craft.  Today it’s all been watered down because people are just looking for a warm body who can fill in keywords and write decent grammar, and do it for five bucks.

I say to hell with that!

Establish a niche, give quality work, and do not settle for less than your time and effort is worth.  Got it?

SITE OF THE DAY

When I am looking for extra work I always go to Craigslist for local listings for writers. There I find local companies who I can establish a rapport with, and there I can pick and choose depending on how much money is being offered.  You don’t need a link to Craigslist, do you?  Good because I’m not supplying one. J

SUBMISSION OF THE DAY

Cape Cod Life is a regional magazine that obviously deals with lifestyles in the Cape Cod area.  They pay quite well and no, you do not have to live in that area to write about that lifestyle.  Check them out here and then use your imagination and creativity.  Give it a go; what do you have to lose?

CONTEST OF THE DAY

NANO Fiction contest…..short stories of 300 words or less….deadline September 1st….you can find the guidelines and submission information here.  Seems like a cool contest to me.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

creativity

You really don’t need me to explain this any longer, do you?

ALTERNATIVE THOUGHT OF THE DAY

Get creative!  How about some YouTube to supplement your writing? How about starting your own writer’s forum?  How about putting together a writer’s group in your town and meet on a regular basis? How about doing interviews on a local radio program?  How about….how about….how about……

MORE TOMORROW OF COURSE

I hope you at least got something out of this to think about. I really want you all to succeed, but it is going to require you to step outside the box and do the extras necessary.  I have a ton of ideas but you have to do the work.

Have a great day and thank you for visiting.

Planting The Seeds Of Your Writing Career

12 Jul

003Happy Friday to all of you. I hope you all have some relaxing and fun plans for this weekend.  I don’t have a clue what Bev and I are doing this weekend but I’m already looking forward to it.  We both work hard during the week so we like to enjoy ourselves on the weekends….and I hope you do that for yourselves as well.

Read the quote below and then we’ll chat some more.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Don’t judge each day by the harvest you reap but by the seeds that you plant.
Robert Louis Stevenson

This is such an important thing to keep in mind as you write, especially if you have visions of success coming your way eventually through your writing.

I have a long-range plan for my writing career and I rarely deviate from it. Everything I do is aimed towards that plan, so that in a very real sense I am planting seeds daily.

Bev and I planted some crocosmia this past May.  We see them all over the neighborhood and we love their delicate flowers, so we decided to plant some bulbs and see what would happen.  Well, what happened was three months of not much…the bulbs sent up green shoots, but no flowers appeared….and the weeks passed and no flowers appeared….and then….

Today the first buds appeared and in a few days we will be enjoying those delicate flowers and rejoicing in the patience we showed.

And that’s the lesson today.  Success in writing does not happen overnight, but if you have a plan then you can rejoice daily in knowing that you are building towards success daily.

Plant the seeds….the flowers will follow.

TIP OF THE DAY

Surround yourself with positive, supportive people.  Whether it be family, friends, or online writers, you need to have some positive vibes coming your way to sustain you through the tough times.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

004

I love this picture. I don’t know about you, but my mind is always in writing mode. We will go for a drive and I’ll see something that suddenly flips a switch in my brain, and I’ll think about how I could write a description of that thing I just saw.  I love it when that happens.

A BREAK FOR YOU AND ME

That’s all today. No sites of the day….no contests of the day….no book of the day….just a sincere thank you for being here.  I will be back Monday doing that thing I do. In the meantime, have a great weekend.

Bill
