The Writing Community

5 Jul

003Good morning my fellow writers and friends.  Blessed Friday is upon us and I don’t know about you but this has been a hellacious week for this writer. For me this week was about making money and keeping customers happy. I would put out one fire and another would crop up, and it went that way all week long.  I am very happy this week is almost over.

I received an email from a friend of mine….Russ Moran….and he sent me a link to a video he had done in promotion of a new novel he is going to release. I thought you might like to see it, so check it out here……edit….I guess Russ removed it for whatever reason…well, you would have loved it.  LOL….okay, try this link and I hope it works…..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgAKq-3lnk4

Talk about ingenious!  What a great way to promote a new book, and one I had never thought of.  A video trailer for a book….how cool is that?

SITE OF THE DAY

Here is the lady who did the video trailer for Russ….check her out here if you think this might be something you are interested in….or make your own video if you have the tech know-how to do so.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

Our prime purpose in this life is to help others. And if you can’t help them, at least don’t hurt them.
Dalai Lama

True words from a wise man.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

This all leads me to my central point today, namely that writers should be helping one another.  This ridiculous concept that we are in competition with each other needs to be tossed in the rubbish.  There are seven billion people on this planet.  That is more than enough to go around for all the writers of the world.

Russ could have kept his little advertising promo to himself but instead he shared it with me.  I try to share my knowledge about writing and marketing with all of you.  That’s the way it should work….or am I just full of it?

It’s a tough grind being a writer. I prefer to have as many writing friends as possible to help me through the tough times, and I am more than willing to share what I know if it will help someone else.

SITE OF THE DAY

Poets & Writers is a non-profit site for the arts that has been around since 1970.  Here you will find all manner of helpful information and references to other sites you might find helpful.  Find them here.

CONTEST OF THE DAY

MadPoetry.org has a list of poetry contests that are ongoing throughout the year. If you are a poet and would like to enter a contest, check them out here.

PROMPT OF THE DAY

Yellowstone 2009 195

Another pic that reminds me of summer. I hope it stirs something in you and brings out your best work.

TIP OF THE DAY

Edgar Allan Poe once said that a story must have a single mood, and every sentence must build to that mood.  Words worth remembering.

HAVE A GREAT WEEKEND

I plan on doing so and I hope you do as well.  Remember to spend time for yourself this weekend and give your brain a rest….if that’s even possible for writers to do. J

It seems like everyone is in competition with everyone over everything. It’s exhausting.

I hope you have a delightfully relaxing weekend. You deserve it!

It’s funny, Cyndi, but I don’t feel like I’m competing with any of you….too bad some writers can’t find the wisdom in being an active and giving part of a community. 🙂

I am going to have a great weekend my friend. I hope you do the same.

I’m not Cyndi. You better get some rest this weekend. 😀

Wow! Sorry, Lizzy! I was even thinking Lizzy when I wrote that. LOL

    • Billybuc July 5, 2013 at 8:33 pm #

Not everyone, Lizzy! You and I still believe in helping others. 🙂 Thanks and I hope your weekend is a good one too.

The video has been removed by owner. 😦

    • Billybuc July 5, 2013 at 5:20 pm #

Oh, that’s too bad….it was really cool….well, maybe he’ll put it back up soon.

I just saw a previous comment saying the video was removed, I thought it was just my phone. I would have liked to see it, too! Sounds like a great idea and I would have liked to pass on to a friend who is writing a novel. I agree with you and think we as artists and writers should support and not compete. I’m happy to hear when fellow friends of mine want to start writing. Summer is here and it’s been hot so hoping to call off this weekend. Have a good one 🙂

B…it was a great video…it was like movie trailers that you see at the theater, and it was great. I hope it re-posts soon so I can show it to everyone. Thanks and have a great weekend.

Great idea for a book promo. I’ll have to remember that. Just got a drawing pad today to illustrate this kids book I’ve been working on…

    • Billybuc July 5, 2013 at 8:37 pm #

Good luck with the illustrations, Cyndi!

If the trailer was for the “Gray Ship”, it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NgAKq-3lnk4
(I hope links are allowed in comments. I don’t know the rules here). Anyway, it looked great! And it is a wonderful way to promote a book.
I definitely think writers should help one another, and you do a great job at that! Have a good day.

Bill, have a great restful weekend! You share much of yourself and we, your friends and readers, appreciate it greatly.

      • Billybuc July 5, 2013 at 8:35 pm #

Thank you Jim; I really appreciate it. Have a great weekend.

    • Billybuc July 5, 2013 at 8:35 pm #

Thank you Kathryn! I’ll try that link and if it works I’ll re-post it.

Have a wonderful weekend my friend.

hi bill, I think I’m stalking you!
from your hubpage I took your advice and signed up (yes, paid real plastic money!) for a domain name at HOSTGATOR. I thought everything would be self-explanatory from then on but now I am completely lost. How do I connect the hostgator domain to the wordpress blog I have registered but haven’t started to write yet because I wanted to get a domain name first?
Have I got this completely wrong?
By the way, I am waiting for your next book……”online freelance writing for the over-sixties” I think you will have a ‘niche’ market there, as I believe the younger generation (all those under 40!) were BORN with cyber skills, and they don’t need any instruction.
I await your words of wisdom.
    Marie

    • Billybuc July 7, 2013 at 2:53 pm #

Welcome Marie! I have never been stalked by a nicer person. 🙂

I’m not familiar with Hostgator, and since they are all different I’m not sure how to answer your question….they must have a tech support team that can answer your question. Since I am over sixty I have to stumble my way through all of this tech stuff, and often I just turn it over to my wife, who seems to understand this stuff much better than I do. I feel bad not being able to help you with this, but that’s my advice….find the help button and let the techies help you with your questions.

Thanks for the visit. If you have other questions that I can actually help you with 🙂 you can email me at holland1145@yahoo.com

Especially love the quote of the day by Dalai Lama ♥

I do too, Kathi! Thanks for stopping by and have a great week.
