All Ya Gotta Do Is Sit Your Butt Down and Write

7 Jan

003Happy Tuesday and Happy end of the holidays.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Christmas (kind of) but I am always so happy when the madness and rush of the holidays end.  Now I can get back to doing what I love to do, namely writing.

And that’s what this site is about….writing.  If you are a writer then I hope you find something here that will help you. If you are a writer wannabe then hopefully I’ll inspire you to finally sit down and start writing.  I have said before and I’ll say again, the world desperately needs writers.  We need more beauty in the world, and writers have the ability to alter reality and make this world a bit more manageable.  I love that I am part of this very special fraternity/sorority. J

This is just a random posting with a few odds and ends I want to toss out.

SITE OF THE DAY

Bev was surfing yesterday and she found this site called NokBok.  It is a new site for writers and it will open next month….check it out here….the royalties they say they will pay are great.  It might be a nice place to put some of your old Hubs that have not done well and see what happens.  It’s free to join so go read about it and let me know what you think. I’m going to sign up this morning as soon as I finish this missive.

WRITER OF THE DAY

Check out a new friend of mine and a lady who is very serious about this craft of writing; she has the desire to improve and I love her passion.  Here is her blog and oh, yes, her name is Michele!

NEXT SITE OF THE DAY

Hey, a little self-promotion never hurt anyone, right? I started a new blog called The Dysfunctional Playhouse and I’d love to have you join me there.  You can find it right here.  I will be posting to it every Tuesday and Thursday and we’ll discuss succeeding in life despite our weird families. LOL

PROMPT OF THE DAY

074

Go ahead, immerse yourself in the picture and let some free verse emerge.  Give it a try and let your muse roam free.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

So much is written about how to write a novel.  It all makes for nice articles and then it all makes for nice kitty litter box linings.  Listen up because I’m going to give you a sure-fire way to write a novel….are you ready?

Sit your butt down and write!  Don’t tell me that you have always wanted to write a book but never got around to it. That’s just so much horse dung!  Make time!  Your life span is shortening as we speak, so get with it.

“But how do you do it” the whining continues?  Sit down and write!

Listen, we all have our own process.  I like to write the basic story first, and then on my second draft I fill in character and scene descriptions, and I also add filler and subplots that will give the story depth. But I like to write the whole basic story first so I maintain the rhythm that I believe is so important.

There are those who start with an introduction. There are those who begin with a conclusion.  There are those who write character descriptions and then let the characters tell the story.  There are those who only write in the morning and there are those who write late at night.

Find what works for you and then sit your butt down and write!

THAT’S ALL I’VE GOT THINGS TO DO

I would love to spend more time with you but hey, the short week put me hopelessly behind on my schedule and I’ve got to get busy. Have a great week and if you get a chance come visit me at The Dysfunctional Playhouse.  We’ll have fun there. J

Truly all about writing and must tell you since I took a bit of time over the holidays, I can’t stop coming up with ides, but seriously can’t even write as fast as my brain is going now. So, I keep jotting down notes on my iPad to remind me when I do have a moment to write and elaborate on certain ideas and thoughts. Definitely, just the writer in me, I suppose. Happy Tuesday and hope it is a great one now for sure 🙂

Janine, I feel the same thing every Monday after taking the weekend off…it’s a great feeling, isn’t it? 🙂 Thanks my friend.

Bill, I bookmarked NokBok the other day when you brought it up on Facebook. I have 3 full circle hubs just sitting there doing nothing. I like your idea of trying them out on NokBok to see how they do. I’ll have to put that on my to do list. Right now I’m working on my next blog (this one’s taking quite a bit of research).

I might not be working on a novel, but I’m definitely sitting down and writing!

Enjoy your day. I just wanted to stop by and see what you have going on today.

Sha, I’m going to finish this comment and then get busy on my novel. Tuesdays are my big novel day; I try to do at least 3,000 words on Tuesdays, 6,000 for the week…so no customers today. Have a good one and yes, give NokBok a try; downloading is easy….although it has to be in PDF to download a story…seems like a good place for poems and short stories.

I agree, the most important advice anyone can get about writing is to simply sit down and start writing. Making writing a priority is the first step the second is putting words on paper. I looked at the NokBok site and definitely want to try it out! Thanks for sharing it with us!

Hey Donna, good morning. I think people complicate things too much….just write and let the ideas and words flow. Who knows what you will end up with. 🙂 Thanks for stopping by this Tuesday morning.

With all the snow days…there’s nothing left to do but read and write:)) I’m taking advantage of it as a good thing!

What a mess you guys have got, Kelly! I hope relief comes soon; if I could I’d send you some of our balmy weather.

Great advice! Sit down and write. I need to do more of that. i will also check out NokBok. It can’t hurt. 🙂

    • Billybuc January 7, 2014 at 5:38 pm #

Hey Vicki! No, it can’t hurt. They will open for business in February but they are accepting authors now. Give them a look.

I just signed up for NokBok. It’s very simple!

I agree Bill…gotta get the seriousness to pen down at least 1000 words each day for my novella…thanks for the encouraging words

gotta check out that e-lib thing…sounds cool
i just subscribed to your new blog 🙂

    • Billybuc January 7, 2014 at 7:13 pm #

I saw that Ruchira. Thank you for signing up and good luck with that novella.

We have been on the same wavelength this morning. I was thinking about all the things people say they can’t do. Can’t lose weight, can’t keep the house clean, can’t save money for retirement, can’t finish quilts, can’t write that novel. And the takeaway I get from this – it is really easy – it is just simply a matter of doing it every day. It isn’t hard work – it just takes a few minutes, but it seems insurmountable when looking at the whole thing. Like you said. All ya gotta do is sit your butt down and write.

    • Billybuc January 7, 2014 at 8:55 pm #

Shasta, exactly. First of all, thanks for taking the time to comment. Secondly, writing a novel with 100,000 words is a daunting task if one simply looks at the sheer volume of words…but if you look at it as 500 words per day, it becomes very doable. 🙂

I’m thinking we’re all in the same boat – trying to move forward, day by day, in the writing world. You’re a great source of motivation for many people, Bill! Happy new day x

    • Billybuc January 7, 2014 at 8:54 pm #

Christy, thank you for those kind words. I just want others to succeed, and I was raised to help. Pretty simple. 🙂

Thank you Bill. Ouch, this one hurts : “Sit your butt down and write. Don’t tell me…” (no I won’t.)
“Wait for the other shoe to drop.”

Michael my friend, just a gentle nudge. 🙂 Blessings my friend.

Yay for the holidays being over! I don’t know why, but we just weren’t in much of a Christmas / New Year spirit these holidays, and Cape Town was a mad house as EVERYONE comes here during December, so I can’t wait till they all zoot back to where they came from! 😉 Also glad to be back to writing. Am loving this new writing gig, even if it’s only till May. Feels good to have a set routine. As far as the novel writing goes… well, I’m putting that one on the back-burner for now. I do have the time to write, but I just don’t have the passion for it. Two months later and no idea what to write… it gets demotivating and I’m enjoying what I’m doing right now – that’s the point of writing, isn’t it? 🙂 Anyway… I’m not crossing it off entirely, I’ll write some more non-fiction eBooks and such, and I would still like to write a novel one of these days.

    Have a brilliant day Bill!

    • Billybuc January 9, 2014 at 3:09 pm #

Mel, I wasn’t in the holiday spirit this year at all and I’m quite happy that they are over. As for your novel….if it isn’t there it isn’t there. Do what you enjoy and be happy. Thanks for your thoughts my friend.
