Are You A Writer Who Believes In Community?

21 Feb

003Happy Friday! I’m all messed up this week having forgotten to write a blog yesterday, so forgive me for my transgressions.  Sheez, it sounded like the old days making confessions to Father Donley.  Arggh, what a horrible memory! LOL

Today let’s talk about sharing ideas, but first a quote.

We are not cisterns made for hoarding, we are channels made for sharing.

Billy Graham

Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would quote Billy Graham. J  Live long enough and anything can happen.

I have never believed that my writing friends are my competition.  What a silly concept.  My writing friends are my friends, and as such I share ideas with them.  If I need a cup of sugar I go next door; if I need a writing idea, I read other articles written by writers who I trust.  Pretty simple really.  There are hundreds of millions of readers out there, more than enough to go around for the few million writers.  You are not my competition; you are my support system.  If I can be of any help to you then simply ask and I’ll do what I can, but be warned that I expect the same from  you.  I hang with the winners, and those who do not want to share don’t need to hang in my writing neighborhood.

Share with others your thoughts on writing. If you have found something that works then let others know. We are a community. We are the only ones who know how hard it is to be a writer.  Embrace that fact and use it.

Having said all that, I want to invite any of you who want to do a guest posting on this blog. All I ask is that it is related to writing and writing tips.  Tell us what is working for you; tell us what is not working for you.  Your posting can be as long as you want; just send it to me at on a Word doc and I’ll share it in my blog with links to your website or other site.  Okay? Okay!

Thank you for your feedback about this blog. I’ll keep writing it since so many of you told me it is helpful to you….but feel free to do a guest blog so I don’t have to write so much. LOL

Use it…don’t use it…this picture is here to help shake loose some ideas for you.

I want to give a shout out to Carb Diva on HubPages.  She was telling me her views are way down and so I thought I would introduce you to her. She writers recipes, and as you know I am, at times, a little hard on recipe writers….but this lady I like because she writes interesting introductions to her articles and actually shows a desire to make her work interesting.  You can find her here.

Have a great weekend! Give some thought to my guest blogging offer, and thank you so much for being here.

You know I totally agree with you on this and not sure why anyone would think that other writers are their competition. Just sad and petty to think this way in my estimation. That said very much with you on this as always. Happy Friday once again 🙂

Thank you as always Janine. You are a giver by nature and that’s one of the reasons why I respect you so much.

Nice post bro, its what I been doing ever since joining the online world and online communities I’m part of, and I know you know that. I think more of us need to help encourage one another out here for sure, and guide others who need the help if at all possible. Good stuff Bill.

Thanks buddy! I guess I’m just a bit disappointed in some writers who seem to live in a cocoon and don’t give a notice to other writers….we need to help one another…pretty simple concept if you ask me.

    Hi Bill,
Thanks for keeping the blog going. Your thought for the day resonated with me. It was back in 2010 when I was putting my first novel out there for publication that I realized that it is not just writers, but all creative people who can say that the people who are doing the same as they are are not their competition. A person who likes art is likely to buy art from others who are similar to art that he or she already collects. A creative person who helps another become more creative becomes more creative too. Its quite a paradox when you think about it. Our connections with other creative people do not subtract, it synergizes and multiplies. It builds up, and doesn’t tear down.
Those of us who try to help others, not only helps that other person and ourselves, but it expands the universe around us. We discover that there is an infinite supply to those who are creative. We are gods creating out of nothing. We have no competition because the supply is infinite.

Donna…”we are gods creating out of nothing”….WOW! Great line and great comment. Thank you…you made my day with that one line.

Yay, it’s alive! 🙂 There’s nothing wrong with having someone else’s article inspire a piece of our own. Sometimes even a comment will do the same. If another writer’s piece has lit up the old light bulb above the cranium, their efforts have had an affect and that’s always a good thing!

    • Billybuc February 21, 2014 at 6:06 pm #

Very true, Sha! I have found endless inspiration from the writings of others…and will continue to do so as long as this old cranium still functions. Thanks as always my dear friend.

You are so right Bill. We are all not in competition. The only thing that can upset me is when other writers in the freelancing world charge outrageously low prices thinking that undercutting will do them some good.

Great post Bill. You and the wife have a wonderful weekend, Ya hear!!

    • Billybuc February 21, 2014 at 6:05 pm #

Great point, Greg; that price war going on is hurting everyone. Thanks for mentioning that and I hope your weekend is filled with wonder.

Thank you so much Ruchira! Giving to the community is something I know you do on H.O.W., so you need no lessons from me. Have a wonderful weekend my friend.

So no “Top 10 Hollywood Sex Tips” guest posts? I had my photos picked out and everything . . .

    • Billybuc February 21, 2014 at 9:55 pm #

Are those selfies, Lizzy, or of someone else. 🙂 Sorry to disappoint you my dear, but I do want you to do a guest post about writing please.

    Happy weekend, my friend.
How refreshing your idea quoting one of the most popular “Community Believer” of present era, Billy Graham. His message is pointing to the One in whose ” company ” is place and room for everyone who wants to love his neighbor as himself, to share developed talent, and by giving to receive – as a result of being connected to never-ending source, we call eternal.
Keep up planting seeds, one never know when the fruit of it would be a blessing to a searching soul. We are not sent here on earth to fritter away temporal journey in the body for our own selfish purpose, but for a blissfulness of our fellowman.
    Peace with us.

Michael my friend, good morning and Happy Saturday to you!

You said it perfectly. When my final days are upon me, I don’t want to look back at wasted moments of selfishness and apathy. I want it known that I lived life to the fullest and carried compassion with me wherever I went. Thank you my friend and blessings to you always.

Bill you know where I’m at with this…the community keeps me going all the time. It’s the camaraderie that I enjoy about blogging so much. I try to post things that are helpful to other parents and friends or information that I think is relevant.

Last week my site was down for maintenance so I was off schedule and I hate that! It’s weird and throws me off. Well here’s to a start of a great new week, eh? Cheers buddy!

    • Billybuc February 23, 2014 at 12:18 am #

Cheers to you, Kelly! I hate it when the internet is out or the site goes down; my whole week is blown out of the water. Thankfully it hasn’t happened very often. Thanks for stopping by and have a great week coming.

Thanks for the motivation today. Bill, I consider you one of the most unselfish people and writers in the community.

    • Billybuc February 28, 2014 at 4:08 pm #

Thank you Dianna! We have mutual respect because I feel the same way about you.
