Laugh Through it All

003WRITER’S BLOG

The last day of June?  Really? How is that possible?  There must be some relativity thing going on that causes time to move faster the older you get.

I won’t keep you long.  I know you’re all busy. I just thought I’d toss out a few quick thoughts, tell you how I’m doing and let you get back to your barbecues and picnics.

The novel continues.  I’m probably three weeks away from the completion of the first draft of “Shadows Over Innocence.”  I’m not sure if it’s moving quickly or not.  It’s moving at the speed it needs to move at.  I’m satisfied with it so that’s all that really matters.

It’s been unusually hot so far this summer, and that has led to diminished writing for me.  When I was younger that would have bothered me. Today it is what it is and I roll with it.

QUOTE OF THE DAY

A mentor of mine once said the following:  “Bill, you could make a typhoon out of a glass of water.”  True words when they were said ten years ago. Today, there are no typhoons on my horizon.  I’m in this writing gig for the long run.  I realize it’s a marathon and not a sprint race.  I realize I have to work diligently and not give up.  I also realize there are no guarantees of success.

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

It’s so very easy to get discouraged if you are a writer.  Successes do not come often.  Hope fades all too often.  We are all aware of these things but that still does not take the sting out of continuous setbacks, and worse than any setback is the lack of response to our writings.  Weeks can go by with the same fifty people reading our work.  “Going Viral” is something that happens to other people.  We appear to be stuck in neutral and our transmission needs an overhaul.

If you are feeling these things, all I can tell you is I understand.  Remember that what you do is important.  It may not seem like it most days, but that does not change the truth.  Writers serve an important function in society.  We are the chroniclers of our generation.  We inform.  We inspire.  We give hope.

Keep pushing forward!

CONTEST OF THE DAY

A friend of mine on HubPages, Liz, is offering a contest for one more week.  Check it out here. The winner wins one of my novels, one of Shawna’s books and a book by Liz.  Three books for free…no entry fee…how can you lose on this offer? There have been very few contest entries so far, so your chances of winning are great.

THAT’S ALL THIS WEEK

I have things to do.  You have things to do.

Let’s do them!

Bill, having the kids home and the nicer weather finally here has found me writing a bit less too and I am honestly OK with it, too. Just got to go with the flow I suppose, but still wishing you a wonderful day and week ahead, too.

    • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 3:12 pm #

Go with the flow for sure, Janine. The work will get done when the work gets done, and not a minute before. We all need to enjoy the summer and not fret over the small stuff.

Thank you for being here and Happy Tuesday to you.

We’re actually having a few breezy days here. It’s a nice break from the sweltering heat.

Glad to hear you’re book’s coming along. Everything has its own pace, especially in the creative world.

Thanx for posting Liz’s contest. We need more entrants for sure.

Enjoy your day. I’m afraid mine is being consumed by trying to resolve computer problems.

    P.S. You spelled my name wrong… 😦

    • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 3:42 pm #

Sorry about the name, Sha! Senior moment all the way. I’ve gotten to the point where I expect mistakes like that one and I can find humor in the loss of mental prowess. 🙂

As I often find myself in brief fits of depression and despair, I realize that life is really so very good. I could still be pounding away in a factory for 12 hour shifts and going home to a bottle of whiskey, but no, I am a writer…and a happy writer.

Thank you for reminding me my friend.

    • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 4:04 pm #

Very, very true, Greg. I understand that statement completely….and lived it as a matter of fact. Thank you for shedding some reality on the conversation.

Seems like the summer is passing quickly. I can’t get enough of the back yard barbeque these days. I am learning to take time to stop and listen to nature, enjoy the sun, and just take life as it comes. That is a step forward for me this season. Enjoy your summer, Bill.

    • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 4:58 pm #

I’m so glad to hear that, Dianna. Amazingly, we haven’t barbecued yet. Not sure why…too busy doing other stuff. You should see my to do list. I think I need to stop and smell the roses, too.

Thanks for spending some time with me, my friend.

I agree June has come relatively fast and I feel if we can term it as “fast” then we are happy, content cause time travels fast for those who let the day pass by without any hesitation and do not cling to any particular date.

Glad to know that your novel doing good, Bill.
I was away visitibg my parents and now shall get back to it 🙂

Gotta find that contest by Liz..love those challenges 🙂

    • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 6:05 pm #

Welcome back Ruchira. I hope you had a nice visit with your family. Enjoy these summer days. They will be gone before we know it.

Hi Bill. I needed this encouragement Bill. I have been at a loss for inspiration for a few weeks now. As always your words ring true. Thanks again.
    Graham.

Billy Buc, YOU are one of the greatest writers EVER. I understand about the heat, I absolutely cannot function in hot humid weather. I will be in touch regarding the pages you sent me, and I look forward to reading the whole novel when completed. I can’t believe it is the end of June either!
We as writers must NEVER, EVER give up. It is so easy for me to say to myself, “there’s NOTHING to write, everyone has said it all, editors want something fresh, with a hook, something different to which I reply “there is nothing different out there!” But then there is God, the Holy Spirit alive in us who CREATES through us.
I only know this, if God wants it, nothing can stop it!
YOUR two novels will hit the right desk at the exact moment God intends. I KNOW it. There is no way they will not get published. Enjoy the mystery of the mail box…I could wallpaper my whole house with rejection slips I have received over the years!
Now go hug Bev and your critters. God bless, Sparklea aka Lea
I will be in touch soon.

      • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 7:26 pm #

Lea, you are like having my own personal cheerleader. You give me the gift of a smile every single time you write to me. Thank you for that gift. We have seven new baby quail I need to attend to, so thank you and I’ll catch you later.

    • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 7:24 pm #

I’m glad, Graham. I do believe it happens to all of us from time to time. We can’t be expected to be creative every breathing moment. 🙂 Thanks for the visit today, my friend.

I have to believe that the writing is the easy part. I know i have control of that aspect. It is in getting the recognition that I have difficulties, but I keep pushing forward and learning everything I can about this industry. It is, after all, (lIke you) what I do.

    • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 7:27 pm #

Donna, I understand completely. I wish I had a shortcut to recommend for you regarding the recognition, but I don’t. 🙂

      • 1authorcygnetbrown June 30, 2015 at 7:44 pm #

I think it is as Edison said, Luck often shows up in overalls and is disguised as work.

      • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 8:05 pm #

I can live with that, Donna! 🙂

I was reminded once again that what I do is important when I met with a family member last night who has been struggling with mental health issues. We talked and I referred this person to my Internet based writings. I felt grateful to be in a position to help, and I can attribute it to the encouragement and inspiration I received from you, Bill! Keep up the good work!

    • Billybuc June 30, 2015 at 8:06 pm #

Aww, Denise, thank you! I just toss out ideas and encouragement. You do the work after that. 🙂

  9. suziehq July 2, 2015 at 8:41 am #

I love what you wrote about writers being important and being “the chroniclers of our generation” It is easy to forget we inform, inspire and give hope which all rate as pretty darn important in my eyes. Any writers in a blank writers block moment or without motivation or confidence should copy, paste, enlarge and print off your words pop in a picture frame and keep near their PC. Thanks for the tip on comp at HP what a fab prize! Have a wonderful day my friend xxx

    • Billybuc July 2, 2015 at 2:05 pm #

Suzie, you still have time to enter. I would love to see you win…hell, I’d love to see you just write something. LOL

Hugs coming your way…hugs of encouragement…hugs of friendship….hugs of love.

    Thanks for stopping by!
