Early Morning Ramblings

23 Jul

It’s Sunday morning as I write this.  Bev is out walking the dogs.  I’m sitting in my office looking out the window at popcorn skies, and my mind is all over the place, skipping through a field of random thoughts.

I’ll share some with you.

DEATH AND TAXES

The only two things we can be certain of, or so we are told.  A former student of mine died this past week. She was forty-two, a mother of two, healthy one moment, spinal meningitis the next, two strokes to follow and dead within a month.  I have nothing terribly inspirational to share regarding her death.  It takes no talent to die.  It takes no special social standing, no set of specific beliefs . . . death only requires that you stop breathing whenever your number is drawn from that lottery headquarters in the sky.

Death has no hold on me. I have given it no control over my emotions since the day my dad died back in 1969. I refuse to mourn and I choose, instead, to celebrate the life of the person passed.

R.I.P. Sara . . . I’ll be joining you at some point, so save a spot for me please!

YOU ARE A WRITER?

You meet new people and eventually the conversation comes around to “what do you do?”  And my answer is always “I’m a writer,” and their reaction is always “WHAT?????”  Like total disbelief, mixed with sadness,  look at this poor creature, wasting away in a fantasy world, actually believing he is a writer.  If I told them I was a plumber their reactions would be much different . . . a grocery store clerk . . . an office worker . . . a school teacher . . . but a writer?  WHAT?????

If you have ever faced that kind of reaction, or if you have ever been looked upon as slightly mad for following your passion in writing or art or music, consider this: We have a talent shared by only about 5% of the people on this planet.  Out of seven-billion plus, you and I and a small handful of other writers are capable of creating works of art using words, works of art which will make people laugh, or cry, or shout to the heavens “OH WOW!”

So, what do I do?  I am a writer.  I create art, using words, in a world hell-bent on ugliness and  destruction.

Put that in your pipe and smoke it!

CONNECTIONS

When I was maybe ten, or eleven years old, a friend and I started our own neighborhood newspaper.  His last name was Bird…mine Holland…so we called the newspaper The Flying Dutchman!  Get it?

The reason I mention that is because even at that age I was interested in writing and connecting with people.

Flash forward six decades and how cool is my life?  Because of writing, and because of the internet, I have several good friends living in California. Several more in Florida, a couple in Ohio, one in Iowa, Dubai…where the heck?…China, Australia, New Zealand, the Philippines, England and Italy and Canada and…and…and….all told, friends in forty-one states and fifty-three countries.

Pretty damned good for the original Editor-in-Chief of the Flying Dutchman!

Have a great week!

Bill

Good morning Bill – I agree, ‘You are a writer.’ Sorry you lost a friend/former student. Forty-two seems too young to call it quits. There were so many rapids left for her to travel.

    • Billybuc July 23, 2019 at 4:22 pm #

Thank you Mike! Death is just so random; no rhyme or reason to it. Make the most of the time you have…trite but also true.

Aw, Bill, I am slowly playing a bit of catchup after being away. But I am so sorry to hear about your former student. You honestly just never know in life what will happen from one minute to the next. That said, there is one thing I do know and that is that you, my friend, are indeed a writer. So, thanks for sharing your writings and musings with us here once again this week. Also, wishing you a wonderful Tuesday ahead.

    • Billybuc July 23, 2019 at 4:23 pm #

Welcome back, Janine, and thank you for your kind words. I hope you had a great time on vacation. Now, get back to work, young lady!!! lol

  3. marlenebertrand July 23, 2019 at 2:17 pm #

I wonder why people act that way toward those who claim their writer status. I now answer in a matter-of-fact tone, almost daring them to say something. Have a beautiful Tuesday, Bill.

    • Billybuc July 23, 2019 at 4:23 pm #

I love it, Marlene…daring them to say something. Good for you! I love you attitude, girl!!!!!

You and I agree on so many things! I agree. Death is a part of life, not to be relegated to some dark place, but to be celebrated for a life well-lived. I have had the honor of being present when several people went to their final reward and I also don’t see it as a bad thing. I remember that before my dad died, he was ready to pass and my mother had no objections to going either.

This past several months I was working with several other teachers in preparations for summer school and out of seven of us, three were writers. Each of us not only has other stories to tell, but each has his or her own unique story as well.

    • Billybuc July 23, 2019 at 4:24 pm #

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about death, Donna. I have spent too much time in the past mourning. I won’t do it again. Celebrate the life lived…that’s my motto and I’m sticking with it. 🙂

Oh, my dear Bill, you must know that I relate to your words from death to writers! I stopped sharing what I write but Greg died with “his boots on” well in his case ” inks in his hands” or “a finger on a computer tab”. He wanted to demonstrate to those saying “What?????” that his “God given talent” (way he used to call his writing skills) was giving him a living. Actually, I disagree in “stress” just to proof others something and more if it causes the end of your days.
How many people are seen in busses, trains, airplanes, etc.; reading? Many people love to read so writers are necessary! And if not necessary, oh well, each ought to do whatever makes them happy, unless it damages other. Writers like you are appreciated by readers like us.
Love the originality of the newspaper’s title.
    Blessings!

    • Billybuc July 23, 2019 at 4:21 pm #

Blessings to you, Maria. Greg was one of a kind, for sure. He loved writing and he loved sharing that love with others…that’s a pretty good legacy to leave others. 🙂 Hugs coming your way, my friend.

    Hi Bill…
I always say there is a point in time when we make a choice we can either live in someone else’s shadow or we cast our own. Life has two directions either forward or yes backwards.
I always say the path we have taken in life has and always will lead us to where we find ourselves today.
Bill you are a writer and my friend let people say “What”. I laugh a little when I hear the “what” as the next comment is “I have always wanted to write a book but where do I start?
My response is just write no matter the chatter in your mind… Just write.

    Well done Bill… well done.

    Hugs from Canada

Just write, Rolly! I love it! What are people waiting for? Permission? A green traffic light? The guts to suddenly appear? Just sit your butt down and write!

Hugs heading your way, my friend.

You always the right words Bill. Always thought provoking. Always true.

Thank you Sir! I do appreciate you loyal following and friendship.

First, reading about your former student. Wow. Just wow. One month. Forty two years young. Just a little older than me. A striking thought. But yeah, I have an interesting view of death given that I grew up in a nursing home and saw it all the time, and then I’ve had close friends and family members go on before me. It’s interesting.
Your life is awesome, Big Bro. I love mine, too. 🙂 Sure, I work at a school part time doing digital marketing (because I taught myself through, you guessed it, blogging). I get to work on my website and mandalas the rest of the time. Oh and building websites for friends. Every week in my life looks different. I used to think that I ONLY wanted to write or ONLY wanted to do art, but this multipotentialite existence where I get to help my community with the school where I work – and where they practice mindfulness – and then have that inform what I do with my personal business, and then have my personal business and blogging skills translate back to the school where I work…all the while drawing and coloring mandalas and…well…I’m in love.
But more than that, the connections. The amazing people I’ve met on this blogging and writing journey that lends itself to so much creativity and stepping into my truest self? It’s not the conventional road. Oh no. It’s not the easy road. Nope. But it’s the one where most days I feel my free spirited wings flying. There are things I’d still like to do and tweak and fix, but more now than ever, there’s a lot of peace in accepting things just as they are.
And so…I’m glad our paths have crossed. Your works of writing inspire so many. I’m looking forward to reading your memoir. I hope you have a great week!

Lil Sis, I think we’ve both done pretty well considering our beginnings. Modern day success stories, me thinks, and ain’t that cool? I love your willingness to flow with life, to embrace adventure, and to seek inner peace. You are my kind of people!!!!!

      Hugs coming your way

Again, Bill, my condolences. Such a young age too. I like to think that death isn’t really random. I believe we were all put on this earth for a purpose, and when we have fulfilled that purpose, we’re called back. Maybe to join the other spirits permanently on another astral plane, or to fulfilled another purpose in another lifetime.

Funny enough, when I tell people I’m a writer, I don’t get the funny looks. (Or maybe I do and I don’t notice.) They seem genuinely impressed and ask me what I write about. I never know what to say then. I suppose some of it fall into that broad spectrum known as’ women’s fiction. But really, I write what I feel. Sometimes it’s about women dealing with relationship issues, sometimes its flights of fancy, sometimes is just random pieces meant for no one but myself.

Thank you for reminding us how privileged and blessed we are to do what we do.

    Have a glorious day, Bill.

    • Billybuc July 24, 2019 at 1:36 pm #

Thank you Zulma! I like your take on death. I lean towards an afterlife of some sort. Not sure what it looks like, of course, but my brain can’t wrap around a vast nothingness. I can buy into reincarnation. Bottom line: I guess we’ll find out when we find out, eh?

Have a brilliant day, my friend. Take care in that heat.

      • phoenix2327 July 26, 2019 at 8:23 am #

Thanks, Bill. I may be tempting fate, but I think the heatwave has broken. Big thunderstorm this morning and it’s already feeling cooler.

        Enjoy the weekend.

      • Billybuc July 26, 2019 at 1:39 pm #

You do the same, Zulma! Hooray for thunderstorms!

    Bill
I’m just reading a book at the moment called ‘anything you can dream’ about a Movie director who was pretty ‘unproven’ with his track record who wanted to make a movie.
It’s a true story as the movie was split into three and between them took twenty Oscars as well as about $4billion at the box office!
By the way, this director never went to film school! I’ll leave you to think which movies they are.

    • Billybuc July 25, 2019 at 1:36 pm #

Lawrence, I’m drawing a blank….was it George Lucas? Who did the Lord of the Rings? What that him?

      • Lawrence Hebb July 26, 2019 at 6:54 pm #

        Bill
I was sorry to hear about your student.
Yes, Peter Jackson. But the point was we’re only restricted by ourselves and what we think we can’t do.
Life is short and we don’t know when that ‘number’ is going to be called, so let’s make the most of what we’re given.

  11. Billybuc July 26, 2019 at 6:58 pm #

I was thinking Peter Jackson and Lucas came out. lol

Hi Bill, I so enjoy your ramblings, nearly always identifying in some part to them. Having the gift to evoke a list of emotions in people is a talent as you say not many have and should be celebrated and respected so you go Bill! You were born to write and do it so well and this Irish woman now living in Italy is so glad you were! hard to believe I’m now in Italy 2 years and still loving every minute, best decision we made! Love to you and Bev, always a cappuccino waiting for you here! Ciao xx

    • Billybuc July 28, 2019 at 2:05 pm #

Irish, thank you for your kind words, but more importantly thank you for your friendship. I’m so happy that you are happy in Italy. My blessings to you and the Mickster!

You are indeed a most excellent writer and loved the flying Dutchman newspaper name.. Yes death comes when our number is up, it holds no fear for me at all.. Just perhaps the manner of passing and Sara’s passing so young and quickly, I feel for those left behind more than those who have passed, for they are already making headway in their new surroundings..
Like you I love to write ( when I have time ) beyond other pursuits 🙂 and enjoy too the friendship of oversea friends from all over the world, in fact you are all in fact much closer than some relatives I know 🙂

So thank you and we should all not be afraid of saying we are writers.
Love and Blessings your way Bill..
    Take care 🙂 Sue

    • Billybuc July 29, 2019 at 1:34 pm #

I appreciate those kind words, Sue.Thank you! I feel the same about you. I wouldn’t follow you faithfully if you couldn’t write well, and that’s just the real of the matter.

Plus you are a quality person, so that’s the daily double in winnings for me.

      Blessings always my friend.

Good friends whose lives you can celebrate and a good way of life based on what you love to do, what more could you ask for?

    • Billybuc August 4, 2019 at 2:46 pm #

Not much, Andrea! I figure I’m a pretty lucky guy.
